How To Spend Time With God in The Morning

Top view of a morning routine with Bible reading, coffee, and healthy breakfast.

How can I make time for God in the morning? What are the different ways I can spend time with God? How do I read the Bible? What are some Christian artists I can listen to in the morning? We answer all of these questions and more in this blog. Luke 10:41-42 says “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” In this passage, Jesus commends Mary for sitting at His feet and listening, reminding us that spending time with Him is the most important thing, even amid a busy life. These verses encourage taking time to pause, pray, and connect with God amidst the busyness of everyday life. I hope once you are done reading to the end you will have an idea of how to spend intimate time with God in the morning. Hopefully, you can incorporate Him into your morning routine so you can have a beautiful godly day.

Wake up early in the morning to have time to spend with God

Waking up early allows you to spend unrushed time with God. When you rush your time with God, you not paying attention, and soaking in the word. Psalm 46:10 (NIV) says“Be still, and know that I am God.” This verse calls for stillness and reflection, reminding us to slow down and focus on God’s presence in our lives. To help with waking up early, gradually implement these two habits:

  1. Create a Morning Routine You Love: I go into detail, about how to create a morning routine in this blog post to help you out. Creating a morning routine, you love will help you wake up because you have something to look forward to.
  2. Expose Yourself to Natural Light: As soon as you wake up, open your curtain and window to your bedroom and let the light in. Go an extra mile and go outside to soak in the morning sun. This helps alert your body that it’s time to wake up.

The goal is to wake up 30 minutes to an hour before the time you need to start getting ready for the day. Then you will use that time to sit, read your Bible, journal and pray to God.

Choose a quiet spot where you will spend time with God this morning

Mark 1:35 says “Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.”

Jesus took time to step away from the busyness of the day to spend time with God in solitude and prayer. It emphasizes the importance of carving out moments of quiet time with God. Wherever it is for you, choose a place in your house where it’s quiet, and has fewer distractions, you’re comfortable and it’s just you and God. For me, it’s my bedroom and living room.

Pick a chapter from The Bible and study it

When people ask how I spend time with God, I say there are many ways to spend time with God but start off reading the Bible. People are usually intimidated by this task because it is a chunky book with so many chapters where does one begin? The right response to those questions is to begin.

  1. Start off with a prayer to God to eliminate distractions, invite Him in this time let him know He’s allowed in this time with you, and for Him to give you eyes to something you wouldn’t have seen and wisdom, knowledge and understanding to interpret His word truthfully.
  2. Choose a chapter from the bible, then read 1-3 subchapters or how long you can read in your morning routine.
  3. Journal how you interpreted the scriptures. Go ahead, and ask yourself questions like, who were the main people being spoken to, what did God tell them to do, what is God trying to teach us, what did you learn etc.
  4. Open apps on your phone like Enduring Word to help you with the true biblical meaning of the verse from experts. It gives you a simple breakdown of what the verse is saying. Compare your notes to yours.
  5. Watch Christian Youtubers like Melody Alisa which helps break down scripture and help you understand His word.

If you still struggle with choosing verses to read from then there are apps like The Bible App that choose for you verses of the day and help start the conversation by having breakdown videos of the verse and a devotional. Get cozy while doing so. Light a candle, wrap yourself in your blanket and drink a nice hot cup of coffee or tea.

Go on a prayer walk

This one ticks all the boxes because you spending time with the Lord, praying by speaking to Him, and also getting in your morning movement/exercise. When something is in my head and I need God to answer me, need fresh air, feel frustrated and get out of the house I go on a walk and talk.  I talk to God like he’s right next to me. It probably looks crazy to people on the outside but it works! You don’t need to feel like me to go on a prayer walk. If you are someone who genuinely enjoys walks, then this is a perfect way to spend time with the Lord.

After you may listen to Christian podcasts discussing the topic that you need help with. These are Christian communities that help you with stuff with true biblical counselling. Christian podcasts I’m loving right now:

Share the gospel with your loved ones or a stranger

Matthew 28:19 says Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and the Holy Spirit. Jesus lovingly commands us to spread the gospel, his word to the world as his disciples. To make more disciples. He will guide and empower us along the way.

After your quiet time with the Lord tell your loved ones the verse you read and what you have learnt and how people can implement it in their lives. You never know if it might help someone, or answer someone’s prayers. Sharing the gospel is a great way to work in His kingdom, be his disciples and transform people’s lives. It’s a great way to spend time with God and lean towards him. There are different ways to do this:

  • Tell your loved ones when they wake up
  • Text your friends or family group chat,
  • Create an Instagram story sharing what you read and learnt this morning
  • Share with your co-workers in the morning when getting to work
  • Share with the person in line with you when waiting for your morning coffee or smoothie at Vida e Café.

Start your day with a prayer

Mark 1:35 says “Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.” Even Jesus took time to step away from the busyness of the day to spend time with God in solitude and prayer. It emphasizes the importance of carving out moments of quiet time with God.

Acknowledge God’s presence and love in your life with a gratitude prayer when you wake up. Thank Him for protecting you during the night, blessing you with this beautiful day and other things you are grateful for. Ask him for protection as you go about your day. Give him all the glory and praise because he is worth it. Get intimate and vulnerable with your prayers, go deep. This is an amazing way to spend time with God and grow your relationship with God because He is there, and He is listening.

Yesterday I attended Gather 25 a global event where churches from all across the world gathered with the goal to pray and spread the gospel. This morning I woke up with a grateful heart thanking God for allowing me to attend such a beautiful event, organising this event and letting it happen. I prayed that it helped at least one person out there.

Go about your morning and listen to worship music

In the shower, when getting ready for your day, in the kitchen when making breakfast, or in the car when driving to work, whatever it is, go about your morning listening to worship music. It’s a great way to listen to God’s word, encourage our faith and hope and help surrender to God. It breaks down our walls and helps us to seek God and spend time with Him. You may listen here to this Worship music playlist on Spotify.

This blog is about the power of a morning routine to help you spend time with God. Start your day with habits that will draw you closer to Him. To get started, wake up early so you have slow, unrushed time with him. Say a prayer, read the Bible, go on a prayer walk, spread the gospel and listen to worship music. Over time, these habits will become ingrained in your routine, and you’ll grow your relationship with God.
