How To Get Your Life Back On Track
Every week since I started my blog, I figure out a blog topic I want to write about and post. I try my best to not make it about myself but instead about the reader, as the purpose of the blog is to help you build healthy habits to get the best out of life and create your dream healthy life through a morning routine. This week I wanted to be more personal and share that I don’t have it planned and structured all the time and that I fall off the track, but eventually pick myself up and start taking action.
Getting off track
About two weeks ago, I went out of town for my cousin’s 31st birthday. It was a full weekend of celebration. I left on Tuesday, 11th July, arriving on Wednesday 12th July. I had told myself that this would be the weekend I let my hair down and just have fun with my family celebrating. Don’t think about work, and your goals and how are you gonna make it. Just have fun. I had also told myself that I’ll be taking a week off so I won’t post a blog this week. I wasn’t going to find time in the ups and downs of birthday celebrations, a full house of screaming and drunken people to find quiet to do research and write my blog. So this week was off. Granted, I had my fun. I made memories with my family that I will cherish forever. I stayed longer with my cousins than I planned. I stayed a week instead of the five days I planned, which messed up my schedule. What I’ve noticed about myself is that I am productive when I have a schedule. When things aren’t going as I scheduled, I just get lost and fall off the track then get stuck and become unproductive. I know it’s not good, it’s just a bunch of excuses which I need to work on. Because I stayed a few extra days, my one week of not working on my blog has now turned into two weeks. When I eventually got back home, I was finding it hard to get back on the track, back to my normal routine and work. Life isn’t always about work, or achieving that next big thing. It’s about enjoyment, living in the moment, spending time with loved ones. That’s exactly what I did in these two weeks but why am I beating myself by still not finding time to work on my blog? I think it’s the fear that I’m gonna look lazy, that I don’t care and I’m not doing anything with my life. With all this overthinking and being in my head it was making me unproductive. So I needed to get out of my rut and get on track!
Tips and strategies to get back on track with your life and goals
One of the first things I did to get help was to do some research, so I went on YouTube and typed how to get back on track. I watched Lavendire video and helped me a lot I wanted to share with you how you can do so if you are feeling just like me and want to get your life back together. Here is what she said, giving my thoughts on each point.
Forgive yourself for getting off track
We like to be hard on ourselves. I know I’m guilty of this. We can say things like we not working as hard. We should be working instead of having fun. We are lazy. These create negative thoughts which we can spend time dwelling on instead of taking action. A tip I would suggest is to celebrate your accomplishments so far. Write them down in your journal or you can say them out loud to yourself. Focus on the positives and what you have done so far.
Review your why
Ask yourself
- Why does it matter that I get back on track?
- What am I going to get from it?
- Why did I start my goals?
Lavendire mentioned that we get caught up in the daily grind that we forget to ask ourselves why we set our goal in the first place. This motivates us to get back on track and start taking action again.
Start small, and don’t overwhelm yourself
You know that feeling when you have so much you need to do that you don’t know where to begin? It starts becoming overwhelming so you end up not doing anything at all. This is something to avoid. Start small, and don’t do too much all at once. Don’t expect yourself to do so much. Begin with one task you want to start with and just do that. That’s good enough. Remember the goal is just to begin and take action.
Build trust with yourself
This is a big one. You know when you say you will do something then you end up not doing it? Repeating this over time will end up making you not trusting yourself. Building trust with yourself is detrimental to getting back on track because it holds you accountable. I would say set realistic expectations, do tasks that you know you’ll be able to do, then build from there. When you are able to do them, this buidls trust with yourself and confidence to complete the big tasks.
Make it fun
Lavendire explains that you need to bring joy and satisfaction to your work.
How to add fun in your work:
- Listen to music. Put on some headphones and listen to your favourite playlist. Better yet listen to some classical music to help you concerntrate.
- Reward yourself. Tell yourself if I can get these three tasks done, then I can reward myself by taking a walk. It could be anything, but something you know will give you the motivation to finish the tasks on hand.
- Do with a partner. Done the right way, partnering around tasks can provide a sense of companionship and accomplishment. I do this with my siblings. When they come home from school and need to work on their homework, I also use this time to finish up any work I needed to do that day. Housechores included, one will wash the dishes while the other dryes and packs.
Make it visual
Things such as habit trackers, and vision boards help in this case. It’s better to remember something when a toy can see it every day. Stick it up your bedroom wall or somewhere you’ll know you’ll be seeing it, reminding you.
Celebrate small wins
It’s important to celebrate our wins, whether small or big, because it allows us to be grateful and proud of ourselves. This gives us a boost of confidence and motivation to keep going.
Focus on the feeling
What feeling do you want to achieve when you achieve that goal? Is it an accomplishment? happiness? Whatever it is, when you feel it now it will motivate you to carry on.
Embrace imperfection and resilience
Remember that you are not perfect. You are a work in progress. Pick yourself up and get back on track. I know that resilience is something that I’m working towards. I’m undoing the short-term gratification, but remember to keep on going when it gets difficult.
Conclusion
Writing this blog and posting it is an achievement because it shows I picked myself up and took action. It may not be perfect, but its action nonetheless. Action is one thing that will to get you back on track. Take your small steps and celebrate your wins. You’ve got this x
