Well, read further.
Don’t look at your phone first thing in the morning
I know it’s tempting to look at your phone first thing in the morning, especially on New Year’s. Maybe it’s those pictures and videos you want to look at from last night, Instagram stories of your friends and acquaintances, or messages received from loved ones. I always say the morning is about you. it’s a time to be selfish with your time and be present with yourself. Give yourself attention rather, than giving it to others. That’s the whole reason for not looking at your phone. Try not to look for at least 15 minutes – that’s not too bad, right?
Say what you were grateful for this year
Use the 15 minutes to say something you are grateful for out loud to yourself. You can say something you are grateful for in the moment, or things you are grateful for that happened in the previous year. Here are some examples to help you get started:
- I’m grateful to enter 2024 on a positive note
- I’m grateful to have lived a full year of life
- I’m grateful for the life lessons I learned this year
- I’m grateful for shelter, and I have a place to stay
- I’m grateful for the time spent with my loved ones and my pets
- I’m grateful that I have access to clean water and food to fill my stomach and give me energy and the right nutrients my body needs
- I’m grateful for my health
- I’m grateful to be able to make an income and provide for myself and my loved ones
- I’m grateful for the opportunities I was blessed with
- I’m grateful for being able to travel and see beautiful places in this world
- I’m grateful for the laughter and joyful moments this year
- I’m grateful for my team
- I’m grateful for the education I received
- I’m grateful for the extensive knowledge I have access to through the internet, social media and books which is helping me with my self-improvement
- I’m grateful to be able to achieve my goals
- I’m grateful for my pain, and the lessons learned from it
- I’m grateful to have eaten a good meal
- I’m grateful to have listened to my favourite music and watched my favourite movies
- I’m grateful to have experienced unconditional love
- I’m grateful for my warm clothes and comfortable shoes
Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate
Before you consume anything else, hydrate by drinking water in the morning. It would be a glass of cold water or a cup of warm lemon water. You’ve been sleeping for about 7+ hours with no water consumption, so your body is naturally dehydrated. Hydrate first thing in the morning. If you want more information on this, you can read 5 reasons to drink water in the morning.
This is also a pro if you have been drinking alcohol the previous night as a celebration of the new year. Alcohol causes dehydration as it causes us to urinate a lot. Drinking alcohol can lead to a hangover in the morning. Hangovers are never fun and a result of a great time you had last night, but now you are paying for it. To help ease the nausea, dizziness and headache reach for a glass of cold water.
Other ways to hydrate your body in the morning after a night of drinking:
- Coconut water. This is a great option as it replaces the lost electrolytes from drinking alcohol all night.
- Sports drink. This too contains electrolytes which replenish lost nutrients and quickly rehydrate
- Camomile tea. This helps to relieve an upset stomach according to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health.

Meditation
New Year anxiety is real. You may feel the pressure to prove yourself either at work or at school. You probably want to achieve those goals in your vision board, achieve those New Year resolutions or even make your dreams happen! Maybe you not even looking forward to the new year at all. Help yourself by practising a meditation and feel a sense of ease come over you. Practice a 10-minute guided meditation for anxiety.
I also do want to add that if you struggling to manage anxiety, it is perfectly okay. Meditation can certainly help but it’s not the end-all cure. Please seek professional help if you need it.
Journal
Take this time to reflect on your year and think of what you want out of your new year. Journaling on New Year’s helps you identify lessons, mistakes, and actions you made and did the previous year and try to not repeat them, or maybe take a different approach if new beginnings and a fresh start are what you desire in the new year. It’s a great and meaningful way to spend time with yourself, know yourself more and set intentions for the upcoming year. It’s highly productive, and you won’t regret stepping into the new year by answering some journal prompts.

Body movement
Boost your energy and mood this morning by doing some body movements. This doesn’t necessarily mean doing a full workout routine because that is probably the last thing you want after a night of celebration. This could include a 10-minute morning stretch routine, some yoga, hiking with friends or even a morning walk. Whatever it is, get up and move your body. Choose something you know you will enjoy because when you enjoy a workout, it’ll be easier to get out of bed.

Time for some self-care
I always advocate for a person to pour into their cup. That’s why I started this blog and writing this blog post. To start the year on a good note, do some form of self-care. These tiny acts of self-care will boost your mood, make you fall in love with yourself and set the tone for the year, which is the point of this morning routine. This can look like various things such as a skincare routine, bubble bath, reading a book, eating a delicious breakfast, listening to music, buying yourself flowers, putting on some candles, and essential oils.
Eating a healthy breakfast
Continue your morning routine by preparing and eating a healthy, nutritious breakfast to help manage your appetite (if you have one in the morning) and boost your energy levels and alertness, while also providing essential nutrients for good health. Eating breakfast is also a good idea especially if you had a drink or two last night, as it will replenish lost nutrients and electrolytes.

This can also be an opportunity to say thank you to the people who made your previous year possible, happy and filled with love.
